Owner of Companion Care Animal Hospital
Dr. Downey opened Companion Care Animal Hospital in 2005 after 12 years as a veterinarian in private practice. Growing up in a small town, he felt a strong connection to the Wheatfield area. It was the perfect setting to build something meaningful.
Dr. Downey decided to create a hospital where customer education, compassion, and veterinary excellence come together. He was driven by a desire to fill the need for good quality veterinary care that was reasonably priced for the local community. He is particularly passionate about performing surgery and helping customers understand their pet’s health needs.

Our surgical services are backed by years of veterinary experience.
Companion Care Animal Hospital has services for general surgeries, such as spays, neuters, and mass removals, as well as orthopedic surgeries for dogs and cats. Every procedure is performed with thorough pre-operative assessments and attentive post-operative monitoring. Dr. Downey’s surgical expertise, along with our orthopedic surgical consultant for specialized procedures, means that your pet is in safe hands. If your animal companion needs surgery, you can trust that their care will be handled with precision, safety, and compassion.

I have been with Companion Care and Dr. Downey since 2009. His compassion for animals is very apparent, he is thorough and takes his time with each pet parent and animal. The staff is warm and friendly. We feel very fortunate to have such a warm, caring environment to bring our dogs to.

I have been going to see Dr. Downey ever since the practice opened in 2005 I believe. He has helped me through many of my pets, sicknesses, cancers with much knowledge. Recently, my three current rescue cats have all come down with a mysterious virus, and one by one they were sick. My one cat was very sick and was vomiting, had diarrhea, and then wouldn’t eat for days. He was very good at returning phone calls and discussing what we could do next. I did bring her in and He saw what a mess she was. He trimmed her long fur around the anus because she has had so many bouts of diarrhea. She was given subcutaneous fluids, and tried to get a stool sample to no avail.
He prescribed medication to stop the diarrhea and to stimulate her appetite. Dr. Downey was spot on; After giving the medication for one day, she started eating again and being her lovable self. Thank you, Dr. Downey for taking the time with Charlotte and helping to make her well again!

After using Companion Care for close to seven years, I affirm that Dr. Downey and crew are the best in the area based on service and compassion. My Lab was needed a number of procedures and care throughout the years. Jerry had a number of tumors removed with no problem and great care afterwards. The Dr. is the most informative I've experienced and his bedside manner is what a medical doctor should exhibit! I place my trust in Companion Care and ALWAYS will for my pets. Thank you!!
